Consultant Cancer Specialist, Buckinghamshire: Neil Haldar
Consultant Cancer Specialist, Buckinghamshire: Neil Haldar

A Buckinghamshire-based urological surgeon offering the latest advanced surgical techniques for the treatment of prostate, testicular, bladder and kidney cancers, including nerve-sparing laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy with bladder reconstruction and single-incision laparoscopic nephrectomy.

Mr Neil Haldar is Consultant Urological and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.  He offers private treatment for pelvic cancers at two independent hospitals in Buckinghamshire:

  • BMI The Chiltern Hospital, Great Missenden
  • BMI The Shelburne Hospital, High Wycombe

An experienced and pioneering urological surgeon

A graduate of King's College London School of Medicine, Mr Haldar undertook his basic and higher urological surgery training in Oxford.  Choosing to further develop his skills in laparoscopic urology, he completed his training with visiting fellowships to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, an international centre of excellence for urology and nephrology, and to Nantes in France.

Mr Haldar has been Clinical Lead in Laparoscopic Urology at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust since 2005 and is one of the nominated pelvic cancer surgeons for the Thames Valley Cancer Network.  Skilled in the latest procedures and minimally invasive techniques to treat pelvic cancers, he works as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide a seamless and comprehensive service that offers active surveillance, radiotherapy, brachytherapy and chemotherapy, in addition to surgery.

With a special interest in Enhanced Recovery Surgery, Mr Haldar is committed to utilising and developing the least invasive urological procedures possible, and in 2008 was one of the first surgeons in the UK to perform single-incision nephrectomy and pyeloplasty.

  • Bladder cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Adrenal cancer

Nerve-sparing laparoscopic radical prostatectomy

Prostate cancers that have not spread outside of the prostate gland itself, or are of a high grade in a younger patient, are often treated by surgically removing the whole gland in a procedure known as radical prostatectomy.  The prostate may be removed in an open operation, or laparoscopically (keyhole surgery); both techniques have been shown to be as effective as each other at treating prostate cancer, however laparoscopic surgery is associated with quicker recovery times compared to open surgery.  Common side effects for both open and laparoscopic prostatectomy are problems with urinary continence and the inability to have an erection.

Mr Haldar offers nerve-sparing laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, a specialist technique that aims to avoid continence and erectile problems following prostate surgery.  Suitable for men with early prostate cancer, the technique involves carefully cutting the prostate tissue away from the two bundles of nerves that run alongside the gland without damaging them.  Mr Haldar has achieved excellent results with this procedure and is happy to offer his expert opinion on patient suitability in each individual case.

Single-incision laparoscopic nephrectomy

In the last ten years, laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, involving the use of four or five small incisions rather than one large one, has become a routine procedure to remove a cancerous kidney, resulting in less scarring and quicker recovery times for the patient.  Recent developments in the technique now allow the surgeon to carry out the operation through a single entry point, typically the navel, leaving a single small scar and resulting in even faster recovery times.

As a pioneer of single-incision laparoscopic urological surgery in the UK, Mr Haldar is highly experienced and skilled in this ground-breaking technique.
