Specialist in knee arthritis surgery including partial and total knee replacement, soft tissue reconstruction for sports related injury of the knee and treatment of rare conditions of the hip and knee including osteonecrosis, PVNS and metabolic bone disease and the treatment of orthopaedic oncology and surgical treatment of tumours of soft tissue and bone.

 

Mr Max Gibbons is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and specialist in orthopaedic oncology and hip and knee surgery. He was appointed in 1996 to his current post the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust (“NOC”) and has commitments at the Churchill Hospital (Oxford) and Newbury Hospital. The NOC is an internationally acclaimed institution for specialist orthopaedic surgery. The orthopaedic oncology unit is one of five in the UK, which has National Specialist Commissioning Advisory Group status.

 

Mr Gibbons’ NHS base is the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust, an internationally acclaimed centre for diagnosis and treatments of bone, joint and muscle conditions. 

 

Mr Gibbons undertook his training at Oxford University and the London Hospital Medical College. Following qualification he trained in orthopaedic surgery in Bath, Birmingham and Oxford, followed by Fellowship in knee and sports injury in Lyon, France and orthopaedic oncology Fellowship in Washington and Toronto. His main interests are in knee reconstruction surgery and orthopaedic oncology.

Mr Gibbons’ Research interests include bone biology, osteonecrosis and outcomes following sarcoma surgery. He has a particular interest in patello-femoral arthritis and treatment of patella instability. 

 

He has a particular interest in the surgical treatment of tumours of soft tissue and bone. He has wide experience in knee arthritis surgery including partial and total knee replacement, soft tissue reconstruction for sports related injury of the knee and treatment of rare conditions of the hip and knee including osteonecrosis, PVNS and metabolic bone disease.

Mr Gibbons treats the full range of hip and knee problems including:

  • Hip and knee arthritis

  • Rare degenerative joint disorders

  • Bone and soft tissue tumours (benign and malignant)

  • Joint infection

 

He has expertise in all aspects of surgical management of hip and knee problems including:

  • Knee arthroscopy

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (“ACL”) repair

  • Hip and knee replacement

  • Oxford partial knee replacement

  • Patello femoral knee replacement

  • Endoprosthetic  hip and knee replacements
