What are the symptoms of skin cancer?

Often associated with over exposure to the sun, skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world.  There are two types of skin cancer: slow growing non-melanoma skin cancer, which accounts for 95% of cancer cases, and the rarer but more serious melanoma skin cancer which grows quickly and has the potential to spread to other organs of the body.

The most common types of non-melanoma skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).  BCCs usually present as a red, pink or pearly white lump, or as a flat, scaly discoloured patch, whereas SCCs appear as a firm red lump or a flat crusted scab-like lesion that does not heal.  BCCs may also ulcerate and bleed.  Any lump, lesion or skin discolouration that has not healed after four weeks should be assessed by a GP or skin specialist.

Melanoma skin cancer usually develops in an existing mole or can appear as a new mole.  In general, melanomas are irregularly shaped, more than one colour and are larger than normal moles (more than 6mm in diameter).  A helpful way to tell the difference between a normal mole and a melanoma is the ABCDE checklist, and changes of these types should always be assessed by a GP or skin specialist at the earliest opportunity.
