Professor Kefah Mokbel is also Lead Breast Surgeon at the London Breast Institute, an independent multidisciplinary unit providing patients with access to the very highest levels of care and most advanced tests and therapies. He is also an Honorary Consultant Breast Surgeon at St George's Hospital, London and Professor of Breast Cancer Surgery at the Brunel Institute of Cancer Genetics and Pharmacogenomics.

Professor Mokbel is a highly respected breast cancer surgeon, having featured in Tatler magazine's 'Best Doctors Guide' and the Times magazine's list of Britain's Top Doctors.  According to Google Scholar Kefah Mokbel has 335 publications which have been cited 4086 times. He has also written 14 books in various disciplines including surgery, oncology, breast cancer, and postgraduate medical education. Mokbel is a member of the editorial board of several international medical journals and a peer reviewer for leading medical journals including The Lancet. Mokbel has supervised a significant number of higher postgraduate degrees in the field of breast cancer including PhD, MSc, MD and Master of Surgery degrees. Most recently, he was ranked top (No. 1) Breast Expert in London by the American website Expertscape.  A graduate of London University, he received his surgical training at a number of London's most prestigious teaching hospitals, including the Royal Marsden, St Mary's, St Batholomew's and The Royal London.

Professor Mokbel works with a carefully selected team of radiologists, mammographers, pathologists, surgeons and oncologists at the London Breast Institute to provide accurate diagnosis and the most up-to-date treatment options for women with breast cancer.  Where surgery is indicated, he ensures that the patient has all the information she needs to play an active role in selecting the treatment that best suits her needs, and is skilled in modern breast preserving procedures and reconstructive techniques.

What is oncoplastic breast surgery?

In the past, surgical treatment to remove a breast or part of a breast affected by cancer resulted in a poor cosmetic outcome, often causing significant emotional distress for the patient.  Oncoplastic breast surgery is the combination of modern techniques in breast cancer surgery, such as those that preserve the skin or unaffected tissue, with the latest plastic surgery techniques such as implants, skin flaps and nipple sharing grafts. Oncoplastic surgery techniques also entail reconstruction of defects resulting from wide local excision of the tumour (lumpectomy, partial mastectomy) so that the breast shape and contours are optimised following breast conserving surgery.

A range of reconstructive techniques is available and can be performed immediately following the cancer surgery or at a later date.  Although patients should always be aware that the reconstructed breast will not be exactly the same as the original, excellent aesthetic results are now possible, providing a massive confidence boost for women affected by breast cancer. Prophylactic mastectomy for BRCA gene mutations

Research in the last 20 years has identified inherited mutations on the BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 genes as important factors that pre-dispose individuals who carry them to breast and ovarian cancer.  In the general population, the incidence of faulty BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 genes is 1 in 300, however this incidence is significantly higher in certain ethnic groups such as Ashkenazi Jews, where approximately two in every hundred women may be affected. Professor Mokbel currently use the Myriad gene test known as myRisk which tests a panel of 25 genes implicated in the genetic predispostion to breast cancer for actionable mutations including the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.

With a special clinical interest in genetic predisposition to breast cancer, Professor Mokbel offers testing, counselling and advice for women with a strong family history of the disease.  The life-time risk of a patient carrying a faulty breast cancer gene is approximately 75%, although this may be even higher depending on the type of gene and site of the fault, and a number of options are available to those who test positive, ranging from extensive monitoring to prophylactic surgery.

Professor Mokbel's work with women of Ashkenazi Jewish origin in North London has provided him with extensive experience in prophylactic mastectomy.   Recent advances that allow him to reconstruct the breasts using the patient's own skin together with an implant or own-tissue to replace volume have allowed him to produce excellent cosmetic results, while reducing a woman's risk of developing breast cancer by 90%.
