Allergy densensitisation in London
Also known as immunotherapy, desensitisation is a well-established and effective treatment for certain allergies. Administered as increasing doses of the allergy-provoking substance (allergen) over a long period of time, the aim of the treatment is to modify the immune system so that it no longer sees the allergen as a threat and stops producing the IgE antibodies that cause the allergic symptoms.
Immunotherapy is most commonly delivered in injection form, although daily tablets or drops under the tongue (sublingual immunotherapy) are available at specialist allergy clinics for grass pollen allergies. At the moment in the UK, immunotherapy is most commonly prescribed for severe hay fever and life-threatening allergies to bee and wasp stings. Although effective, the treatment is time-consuming and carries a degree of risk, meaning that it should always be undertaken by a specialist immunologist and allergist such as Dr Chee.
