Professor Barry Kay: Allergy Specialist at The London Clinic

Barry Kay

Anthony Barrington (‘Barry’) Kay is Professor Emeritus of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Imperial College, London and Director of the Allergy Service at The London Clinic, Harley Street, London. He specialises in asthma, hayfever, perennial allergic rhinitis, food allergy/intolerance and allergic skin disorders such as urticaria (‘hives’) and atopic eczema/dermatitis.


About Barry Kay, Allergy and Immunology Specialist

Professor Barry Kay MD, PhD, FRCP, FRCPath, DSc, FRSE, FMedSci, was an Honorary Consultant Physician at the Royal Brompton Hospital from 1980-2008 and Head of the Department of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, National Heart & Lung Institute with responsibility for the ‘Brompton Allergy Clinic’.

 

In 2006/2007 he was Specialist Advisor to a House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee enquiry on ‘Allergy’. Professor Kay is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Past-President of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and former President of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology.

 

Professor Kay's publications

Professor Kay was co-editor of Clinical and Experimental Allergy, the official journal of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology from 1984 to the end of 2007, and is co-editor of Clinical and Experimental Allergy Reviews. He is a co-author of over 500 research papers, review articles and book chapters and has edited several books including a major two-volume textbook entitled ‘Allergy and Allergic Diseases’- the second edition was published  in 2008.

 

Honours and awards for Professor Kay

In 1999 the ISI Web of Science named Professor Barry Kay as one of the ‘Citation Superstars of the UK’ when he ranked seventh highest cited scientist in Biomedical Sciences (total citations to papers published and cited between 1990 and 1999). In 2000 he was one of the world's top 250 most highly cited researchers. He has received numerous awards including an honorary Doctorate from  the University of Ferrara, Italy, Honorary Fellow Award of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and the Paul Ehrlich Medal of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology. He was also awarded the Distinguished Scientist award from the World Allergy Organization.

 

Clinical interests - allergic disease and skin disorders

Professor Kay’s particular clinical interests are the common allergic diseases and allergic skin disorders. He has made a special study of anaphylaxis due to food, insect and drug allergy. He also sees patients with food intolerance and food-related disorders in general. His allergy clinic offers immunotherapy (or ‘desensitisation’) either by injection or the more convenient ‘drops under the tongue’ treatment for hayfever and other allergies. Professor Kay also offers allergy skin or blood tests for inhalant and food allergens.

Research interests - allergy and asthma

Professor Kay's main research interest are the identification of the cells and molecules in allergy and asthma; work which involves molecular pathology techniques and provoked clinical models of allergy and asthma together with novel patient-based therapeutic interventions. Professor Kay co-founded an Imperial College, spin-out company (www.circassia.co.uk) focused on developing peptide-based vaccines for the treatment of common allergic diseases. Professor Kay was an MRC Programme Grant holder for over 20 years and remains an investigator in the joint (Imperial/KCL) MRC Centre on ‘Allergic Mechanisms of Asthma’.
