A Consultant Psychiatrist in London who undertook specialist training in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry and provides assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a full range of psychiatric disorders including anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
Dr Faith Contell attended the University of Cape Town in South Africa where she completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Anatomical Science and Biological Anthropology before moving on to her undergraduate medical training. Upon graduation from the University of Cape Town Medical School she spent some time working as a general practitioner in South Africa.
In 1998 she moved permanently to the UK in order to pursue specialist training as a psychiatrist. During her training Dr Contell was an examiner of medical students for Kings College & St Thomas Medical School. She also developed an interactive computerised study and revision tool for medical students. She has coached a number of trainee psychiatrists all of whom have since gone on to pass their specialist examinations.
Following completion of her specialist training she took up a consultant post within the South London and Maudsley NHS Mental Health Trust. Working in an inner London catchment area with a diverse ethnic population and dealing with a broad range of psychiatric presentations.
She then moved to the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire NHS Mental Health Trust, where she engaged in collaborative working with the Oxford Complex Behaviour Team and Crisis Service.
She now devotes herself to full-time private practice and retains admitting privileges to the Cygnet Hospital Godden Green.

Adult Psychiatry

Older Adult Psychiatry

In addition to the above range of disorders older adults (generally those aged 65 and over) are more susceptible to a number of illnesses that require particular expertise. Dr Contell holds a specialist consultant qualification in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a full range of psychiatric disorders relevant to older adults, including:
- Memory Problems (Alzheimer’s, and other Dementias)
- Depression and Anxiety - late onset
- Psychiatric aspects of Physical Illness, for example Disability and Chronic Pain
Liaison Psychiatry
(The term used to denote joint or consultation basis working with other specialities. For instance following a heart attack the patient’s recovery may be severely hampered by depression. Working with the patients’ cardiologists to treat the patient’s depressed mood can enable the patient to progress with their physical recovery.)
Dr Contell is experienced in providing psychiatric input to the management and treatment of psychiatric conditions in the context of medical / surgical illness, in particular:
- Cardiovascular Disease
- Diabetes, and Chronic Pain Syndrome patients
- Psychological aspects of Physical Illness such as Parkinson’s Disease, and MS
- Terminal Illness with palliative care teams, in the management of depression, psychosis, adjustment to diagnosis, and delirium to ease the difficulties facing terminally ill patients.

As an Approved Practitioner Dr Contell carries out independent assessments and reports for MHA Review Tribunals.

Having undertaken training in report writing, and courtroom procedure Dr Contell is happy to accept instructions in Civil and criminal matters including Medical Negligence and Restrictions to Driving.
She is able to offer a fast preparation service for medical reports.
Female Psychiatrist
Many people would rather see a female psychiatrist. Accordingly Dr Contell is happy to see patients who prefer to be seen by a female psychiatrist.

Assessments
First assessments are normally 60 minutes long. Follow-up appointments can vary between 15 to 30 or 60 minutes in duration depending upon the work that needs to be done.

Eating Disorders and Addictions
These are not presently treated in the Clinic. Initial Assessment and advice can be provided as can referral to appropriate specialist colleagues.
Child and Adolescent
Similarly, this group of patients are not presently treated in the clinic. We are able to provide advice and assistance with referral to a Child and Adolescent specialist.
