Neurosurgeons in the UK

Neurosurgeons (sometimes known as "brain surgeons"), are trained in surgery of the nervous system and specialise in surgery on patients with disorders of the nervous system: disorders of the brain, disorders of the intracranial and extracranial vasculature supplying the brain and spinal cord; disorders of the pituitary gland; disorders of the spinal cord, meninges, and vertebral column and disorders of the cranial and spinal nerves throughout their distribution.

There are two professional bodies in the UK which represent neurosurgeons:

• The Society of British Neurological Surgeons
• The Royal College of Surgeons
