Mr Dipak Parmar is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with a practice in general ophthalmology and subspecialty interests in cornea, uveitis, cataract and refractive surgery.

 

Mr Dipak Parmar BSc (Hons), MBBS (London), FRANZCO, FRCOphth (UK), completed his medical training at the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospitals in London. He completed his basic surgical training at King’s College Hospitalin neurosurgery and ophthalmology, following which he successfully passed the FRCOphth examination to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He completed his higher surgical training in ophthalmology and a fellowship in uveitis atMoorfields Eye Hospital in London. 

 

Mr Parmar completed a clinical fellowship in cornea, external diseases and refractive surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, USA, from 2003-2005. As a result of his training and research, he has authored over 27 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has written 3 book chapters. He is one of the few eye surgeons in the UK to have undergone state-of-the-art training in refractive surgery in a prestigious clinical fellowship program in the USA.

 

Mr Parmar was awarded the CCST (Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training) and specialist registration under theGeneral Medical Council in ophthalmology in 2003. He has been a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Whipps Cross University Hospital, London, since January 2006. Mr Parmar was awarded the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) in September 2011.

In addition to general ophthalmology, Mr Parmar subspecialises in cornea, uveitis and cataract surgery. He performs modern corneal transplantation including penetrating keratoplasty and newer lamellar techniques such as big bubble anterior lamellar keratoplasty and posterior endokeratoplasty (DSEK). As a fellowship-trained refractive surgeon he incorporates laser and non-laser approaches to treatment. Laser correction includes wavefront customisation where indicated, combined with LASIK, LASEK or PRK. He is also performs phakic intraocular lens insertion, known as the “implantable contact lens”, in selected cases. Mr Parmar performs state-of-the-art modern cataract surgery using both traditional monofocal and newer multifocal (Restor®, Rezoom®, Tecnis®) intraocular lenses.

Some patients with high myopia or thin corneas are unsuitable for laser vision correction surgery but may be candidates for phakic intraocular lenses (IOLs). In these cases Mr Parmar is one of a select few UK surgeons specifically certified in the implantation of the STAAR® Visian ICL (implantable contact lens) and the Verisyse® &  Veriflex® phakic IOLs.

Mr Parmar pursues an active interest in cornea research through collaboration with Moorfields Eye Hospital in, London.
