Born in London, I was educated at Ilford County Grammar School for Boys and then at the Victoria University of Manchester.

After gaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons England I trained in neurosurgery in Nottingham.

This was followed by a fellowship at the Necker Hospital in Paris and then at the Montefiore Hospital in New York, USA.

On returning from the New York I worked as a paediatric neurosurgical fellow at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford.

I then took up post as a Consultant in Adult and Paediatric Neurosurgery at King's College Hospital and the Evelina Children’ Hospital, St Thomas Hospital.

Cranial and Spinal Neurosurgery, Paediatric neurosurgery.
I manage and operate on children with:-
• Hydrocephalus (neuroendoscopy, vp shunt, va shunt, third ventriculostomy)
• Brain Tumours (Glioma, Medulloblastoma, Meningioma, Ependymoma, Pilocytic Astrocytoma)
• Brain Stem Tumours • Spinal Tumours
• Spina Bifida • Syringomyelia
• Chiari malformation
• Cerebral Palsy (Baclofen Pump Implantation)
• Cranoisynostosis
• Antenatal counselling for parents with newly diagnosed brain or spinal problems with their child during pregnancy.

My adult neurosurgery practice reflects and complements my paediatric practice with specific expertise in:-
• Sciatica
• Back Pain

• Lumbar Disc Prolapse
• Slip Disc
• Hydrocephalus
• Spina Bifida and malformations associated with Spina Bifida, including Chiari and Syringomyelia
• Spasticity, including the insertion of Baclofen Pumps.

I have a specific interest in neuro-endoscopy and perform a variety of endoscopic procedures on patients, including third ventriculostomy, endoscopic treatment of arachnoid cysts, craniopharyngiomas and also use endoscopy as a tool to tumour management.

Along with a spina bifida interest, I have a large cerebral palsy practice. I have been involved with the Intra-thecal Baclofen pump insertion programme since its infancy and offer this service to both children and adults.
Research interests
I have published and presented at national and international level on numerous topics including hydrocephalus, cerebral abscess, consent, trigeminal neuralgia, acoustic neuromas, sub-arachnoid haemorrhage, spinal disease, cerebral palsy and intra thecal baclofen, antenatal counselling in neurosurgery and brain tumours.

I have also been involved with the BBC City Hospital programme, on which seven episodes were filmed involving my patients and surgery. We are continuing to film further programmes.

I have also had numerous articles in the local and national press (South London Press, Daily Mirror and Daily Mail).

I am currently filming for the BBC evening documentary “Survival” to be aired in March 2007.

I am involved with various patient support organisations including the Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (ASBAH). I have recently written the foreword to their “Benny the Bear” book for children with hydrocephalus.

I teach extensively and run a course on Hydrocephalus at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and also guest lecture at International Neurosurgical Conferences.
