The Royal Marsden was
founded in 1851 by William Marsden, his vision was to create a pioneering
hospital dedicated to excellence in the study, treatment and care of people
with cancer.
Today, The Royal Marsden is a world-leading cancer centre specialising in cancer diagnosis,
treatment, research and education. They are recognised around the world for their expertise in treating all cancer types and they are ranked as one of the best
performing hospitals in the UK;
every year they treat more than 40,000 people with cancer. This includes the treatment of children and
young adults in the dedicated paediatric oncology centre.
The Royal Marsden provides outstanding private facilities for private patients
from the UK and overseas and has recently completed a £6 million upgrade to their private facility in London.
They have two hospitals: one in Chelsea, London, and another

Medical Daycare Unit in Kingston, Surrey.
Why choose private cancer care at
The Royal Marsden?
If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer you will want to be referred to a hospital that can provide the best possible cancer treatment and care in a comfortable, modern environment.
Their international reputation as a world leader is based on a number of things: the leading-edge treatments they provide for all cancer types; the breadth of surgery, drug and radiotherapy methods they use; their focus on innovation; and the research that their clinical and scientific teams undertake.
Together with their academic partner, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), they form the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe with a combined staff of 4,300. Through this partnership, they undertake groundbreaking research into new cancer drug therapies and treatments.
They also have an academic partnership with Mount Vernon Cancer Centre (MVCC). This combined partnership enhances their research programmes and their contribution to finding new and better ways to treat patients diagnosed with cancer.
As a private patient at The Royal Marsden, you will have access to some of the most eminent consultants and cancer specialists in the world. Through their work at The Royal Marsden they have pioneered many new cancer treatments that are now the standard of care worldwide. Working together, they will provide you with an exceptionally high standard of cancer expertise covering diagnosis, treatment, recovery and aftercare that very few hospitals in the world can match.

World-leading cancer care expertise, treatment and technology
The Royal Marsden has an international reputation for its ongoing commitment to the investment and introduction of all the latest treatments and technology including:
- The delivery of an extensive range of radiotherapy techniques. CyberKnife is an advanced tool that uses image-guidance to deliver radiotherapy to many different tumour types with pinhead accuracy; Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), a technique that produces radiotherapy in continuous sweeping arcs to deliver treatment more quickly and accurately in order to reduce patient visits and reduce recovery time; and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), a technique that allows them to use higher doses of radiation whilst reducing its impact on normal tissue. They were the first hospital in the UK to use VMAT and one of the first to introduce IMRT.
- Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy, a treatment for breast patients pioneered at The Royal Marsden which involves chemotherapy being given before surgery. The treatment works by shrinking tumours prior to surgery, allowing women who would have needed a mastectomy to have less radical surgery and improving the preservation of breast tissue.
-
The da Vinci S robotic surgery system, used for treating prostate cancer in a new, purpose-built suite at their Chelsea hospital. The system can dramatically reduce the time patients need to spend in hospital after surgery. The Royal Marsden performs the largest number of these surgeries in the UK.
These are just a few of the leading-edge treatments and technologies currently in use at The Royal Marsden. If you would like more information about any of them, or an overview of their work, please visit their website or get in touch.
