Live-in care - your life, your home, your choice

Choosing how and where to live is something most people take in their stride…until issues about elderly care arise. Many of us dread the idea of moving into a residential care home, yet think this will be our only option as we get older.

But there’s another way. Personal support from your own Care at Home carer means not giving up the things that matter, such as your precious home and your own way of life.

If you'd just like more information about  Care at Home you can get in touch with them at any time, even if you’re not ready for live-in care yet. They will be happy to talk to you about your situation and tell you more about themselves. You're welcome to call them FREE on 08000 807891 or request that they give you a call back.

Who gives the best live-in care?

Choosing an agency to provide care for yourself or someone you love needs a lot of thought. This checklist might help you compare in-home elderly care agencies.

Things to ask live-in elderly care agencies before you choose Care at Home
How many years’ experience do you have of providing live-in care for older people? They have over 20 years’ experience and regularly receive recommendations from happy clients and their families.
Are you registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC)? Yes, and they are also a member of United Kingdom Home Care Association (UKHCA)
Are your carers self-employed, or do you employ them directly? They employ all their carers – that’s the best way to ensure continuity, security and consistently high standards
What’s your policy on the number of carers per client? They limit carers to a maximum of two for each client, wherever possible. Most of their clients prefer to have one main carer, plus a secondary carer who can step in when the main carer needs to take a holiday
Are your carers given relevant training?

Their carers are trained in:

  • moving and handling
  • first aid
  • food hygiene
  • giving medication
  • infection control
  • health and safety
  • care and protection of vulnerable adults
  • peg feeding
  • dementia care
  • palliative home care
Are your carers vetted, qualified and regularly assessed?

They carry out a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check on all their carers before they start working for them and again every four years

Their carers must have National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) or be working towards them.

They carry out unannounced spot checks and annual appraisals.

How much do you consult with clients and families?

They make changes on request, including switching staff if things aren’t working out

They conduct anonymous customer satisfaction surveys twice a year and feed the results back to clients.

Clients’ care needs are reassessed every four months.

Are you properly insured? Yes, they have both public and employers’ liability insirance.
How much does your live-in home care cost? Care at Home doesn’t charge for assessment visits to see what care you need. As a guide, their basic full-time live-in care service starts fromt £730 a week, while intensive care may cost slightly more. They can advise you about getting help to finance your care.

  2. When you’re ready, they will come and see you and any family members you may wish to be present, either at home or in hospital.
