Maternity services at The Portland Hospital for Women and Children
Working in partnership with you, The Portland Hospital offers you all of the maternity services you will need to take you through your pregnancy, your preferred or medically required delivery option and your postnatal care needs.
All of your antenatal appointments, scans, blood tests, advice and exercise classes are available at The Portland Hospital. Whether you would like a traditional, natural birth, a water birth, an epidural with your first contraction, or require a Caesarean section, we can help you make a fully informed decision on your birth type.
The Portland Hospital also offers one-to-one midwifery consultations for pregnant ladies and new mothers during the first 28 postnatal days through our Midwifery support clinic.
Both Consultant Led and Midwife Led Care are available.
Postnatal care
Once your baby is born we offer useful advice on breastfeeding and bathing your newborn, and postnatal care such as pelvic floor therapy if needed.
We offer a high level of care on the Postnatal Wards with one Midwife to a maximum of four patients. Your Midwife is there to give you advice, support and help with breast or bottle feeding your baby. Both the Consultant Obstetrician and Consultant Paediatrician are available routinely to visit the ward to check you and your baby following delivery until the day of discharge.
Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) provide 24-hour medical assistance, if required, in the absence of your Consultant Obstetrician or Consultant Paediatrician.

The Portland Hospital's Maternity Unit has 5 delivery rooms on the Labour Ward and 31 en-suite bedrooms on our postnatal floors including 22 single bedrooms, 3 double bedded rooms, 2 deluxe rooms and 4 suites. In addition, two nurseries are available.
