About the Unit
The
Private Maternity Unit is located in the Kensington Wing on the 3rd floor at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The hospital, opened in 1993 by Her Majesty the Queen, is a contemporary environment with its open spaces and transparent roof over a five story main atrium.
Through the Hospital Arts programme, we have more than 1,500 works of art displayed throughout the building and regularly arrange concerts and performances for patients, visitors and staff to enjoy.
The unit itself comprises six rooms all with en-suite bathrooms.
Their individual rooms will provide you with the privacy and peace you need. Each room has been designed with your comfort in mind and comes equipped with a TV, CD player and fridge. Their staff will be available to provide tea/coffee and snacks around the clock, for you and your visitors. And for those visitors who wish to stay overnight, they can usually arrange accommodation.
This relatively small unit enables them to provide you with the personalised care that you deserve in a relaxing, secure and beautiful environment.
Their location, close to the heart of London, offers you and your visitors all the amenities of a multi-cultural city and the vibrant Fulham Road boasts a wealth of restaurants with a diverse range of cuisine to cater for all tastes.
Types of Maternity Care
They offer two options of care. There are:-
Consultant led care
Some of the finest consultant obstetricians work within the hospital. Obstetricians are effectively independent specialist physicians.
During your antenatal care, your obstetrician will carefully assess you to identify any risk factors for complications during the pregnancy. You will be followed closely ensuring that the pregnancy is developing normally. Your obstetrician will answer any questions that you may have and advise you about your antenatal care and delivery.
In the unlikely event of complication during birth, the obstetrician will be there to perform any emergency procedures that may be required.
Since consultant obstetricians are independent physicians with admission rights to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, you must make your booking directly with them. Please be aware that the obstetrician’s fee is in addition to the hospital charges (see booking).
Midwife led care
Midwifery led care is generally chosen by women whose medical history indicates that their pregnancy should be uncomplicated.
They have a team of highly experienced midwives, who will guide you through the options and advise you on all aspects of your care.
All antenatal tests will be carried out by the midwife and scanning requests will be referred to a specialist.
When the time comes, your baby will be delivered by one of the midwives on duty.
Should the need arise during your pregnancy or labour, your midwife will refer you to one of the Consultant obstetricians. If there are complications during the labour the on-call team will be contacted for their advice.
Their administration staff will be glad to answer any questions when choosing the model of care. Further guidance can also be provided by the midwife on duty.
