Independent Histopathology Services Ltd (IHS): Laboratory testing services in London

IHS logo banner

Independent Histopathology Services (IHS), a leading provider of diagnostic services serving the private sector and the NHS, was founded and is led by an experienced group of cellular pathologists.

Histopathology services are delivered along subspecialty lines, and their core team of pathologists is supplemented and supported by a broad network of associated specialists. The consultant team is supported by highly motivated biomedical scientists and staff, all working to the latest CPA standards and using the most up-to-date practices. IHS enjoys close links with several London teaching hospitals, enabling them to provide a full range of molecular and genetic investigations.

Recent developments include the provision of macro/micro path images to complement reports, and the facility for referring consultants to access their results – 24 hours a day – via a secure link to the web site. For more information please visit www.ihs.uk.net

Histopathology - CPA standard E1.2 (c)

  • Frozen sections - CPA standard E1.2 (e)

Our service can be made available out of office hours by prior arrangement.

  • Immunohistochemistry

They provide a comprehensive immunohistochemistry service with rapid report turnaround.

  • Molecular Biology

In appropriate cases, diagnostic molecular biological techniques are available. This applies mainly to lymphoid neoplasms.

  • Digital Imaging

We are now able to offer the incorporation of digitally acquired images of both microscopic and gross pathology into printed reports, and for display via our secure web site. This unique service adds a new dimension to the delivery and presentation of pathology reports.

  • Sub-specialty Work

Through an established network of experts we are able to provide a diagnostic service covering all subspecialties, including renal biopsies, haematopathology, osteo-articular and neuropathology.

Cytopathology

IHS has unrivalled experience of liquid-based cytology and an automated processor, enabling us to deal with a high volume of samples. As an adjunct to cervical screening we offer high risk HPV DNA testing on liquid-based samples, along with PCR tests for gonorrhoea and chlamydia. Consultants also report all cervical biopsy histology, ensuring close correlation of smear, biopsy and high-risk HPV test results. We also provide a walk-in fine needle aspiration (FNA) clinic and support one-stop breast clinics. Through our association with academic units we are able to provide a fully comprehensive range of ancillary tests, including immunocytochemistry and genetic or molecular investigations.

For further information on their cytopathology services please contact: Dr Glen Dixon on Tel: 020 7299 4490 or Email: glen.dixon@capio.co.uk or visit their web site.

Doctors for doctors

The foundations of our service are the close working relationships we develop between the referring clinician and pathologist. This enables us to be responsive to doctors’ individual needs, and create the best possible outcome for patients. This is partly achieved by subspecialty working, and also by communicating directly with our clinical colleagues.

Online pathology

IHS connect banner

SafirLIS Connect is another of our IT initiatives keeping us at the forefront of private sector pathology. It is web-access software designed to enable clients to view their reports (including images) securely on-line from any PC with internet access, and check on the progress of samples which have been sent to the laboratory. If required the client can also print report copies on demand to a local printer. By contacting IHS and requesting access, the client is issued a User ID and Password by our Information Systems Administrator. The only PC system requirements are that the terminal has internet browser software (e.g. Microsoft Internet Explorer) and Adobe Reader installed.

For further information on IHS online pathology please contact Nigel Pilkington on Tel: 0207 299 4490 or Email: nigel.pilkington@capio.co.uk or visit their web site.

Digital imaging

IHS reports

Visual presentation of pathology reports is now very much part of clinical practice, and referring clinicians are becoming more familiar with the appearance of pathological findings. At the same time, diagnostic imaging is going through a digital revolution. This film-free environment has radically altered the accessibility of imaging to clinicians and enormously increased the efficiency of radiology reporting. The benefits of image reports include:

  • Making it easier to explain pathology

  • Illustrating the extent of disease

  • Illustrating involved or clear margins

  • Providing a visual archive of pathology in progressive disease

  • Providing archive material for teaching or research

  • For use in education / explanation to clinicians and patients

  • Providing a visual aid to discussion of treatment with patients

  • Tangibly demonstrating quality of service

For further information on their Digital Imaging services please contact Dr Andrew Gallimore on Tel: 07875 069 012 or Email: andrew.gallimore@capio.co.uk or visit their web site.
