X-Ray scan consultation
At your appointment, you will meet your radiographer or other healthcare practitioner who will carry out your X-Ray. They will be with you through the whole process, from explaining the scan and answering your questions beforehand, to performing the actual scan.
The examination is painless and normally takes between 10 and 30 minutes, although the actual duration will depend on the area of your body being examined, and you can bring a friend with you, no problem.

What is an X-ray scan?
An X-Ray is a picture of the body produced by X-Rays in a similar way to a normal photograph being produced by light. An X-Ray machine produces a burst of high energy radiation which passes through the body to produce an image on a film or detector. The images are then used to show bone and some soft tissue in an area specified by a doctor or other healthcare professional. You cannot see or feel an X-Ray; they are a quick and simple way of looking at the inner body.
X-Ray scan precautions
Some people should not have an X-Ray scan. If you are, or might be pregnant please contact Nuffield Health, as special precautions need to be taken.
X-Ray scan risks
There is very little risk with having an X-Ray. The use of X-Rays in hospitals is subject to strict regulations and the use of X-Rays is assessed on the principle that the risk of having the X-Ray examination outweighs the risk of not having the X-Ray examination. X-Ray examinations are therefore only performed when absolutely necessary.
When X-Rays are taken, some of the energy in the X-Ray beam is absorbed in the body. This is called the radiation dose. Because diagnostic X-Ray examinations involve relatively low doses, these doses are often compared to natural background radiation.
