Breast Imaging
Digital mammography
This is a low dose x-ray examination of the breast using specialised equipment and is used as the first imaging investigation for symptomatic and screening purposes in women over 35, including women with a family history of breast cancer or those on hormone replacement therapy.
Breast ultrasound
Ultrasound is used where there is a focal abnormality in a part of the breast and will differentiate solid from cystic lesions. Increasingly this technique is used in conjunction with digital mammography as both techniques give complementary information. When small, impalpable masses are found within the breast, ultrasound is used to guide the needle centrally within the lesions to obtain tissue samples for either cytology or histology. In patients under 35, ultrasound is used in conjunction with clinical examination as a screening technique.
Cytology
An investigation where a fine needle is inserted and a sample taken from the breast under clinical or imaging control, so that cells can be examined microscopically.
Core biopsy
A slightly larger needle is inserted into the breast to remove a small tissue sample for histological examination. This may be performed under ultrasound or x-ray guidance, using computerised stereotactic control. This technique is relatively painless and it may be used to establish a tissue diagnosis, in certain circumstances it renders surgical excision of a confirmed benign lesion unnecessary.
Localisation
Should surgery be required for a non-palpable abnormality within the breast, guidance for the surgeon is provided using either wire placement or ultrasound guided skin marking, whichever is most appropriate.
General radiology
108 X-ray and Imaging is able to offer a general radiology service including a full range of plain film examinations of chest, abdomen, pelvis, skull, sinuses, spine, skeletal survey and stork views.
Ultrasound
The ultrasound equipment and probes used provide excellent high quality images. The department offers a wide range of general ultrasound examinations including abdominal, pelvic, urinary tract, testicular, thyroid and soft tissue, and transvaginal ultrasound scanning fro gynecological imaging.
