At your appointment, you will meet your radiographer who will be an expert in ultrasound scanning. The radiographer will be with you through the whole process, from explaining the scan and answering your questions beforehand, to performing the actual scan. 

Your ultrasound scan appointment can take up to 40 minutes, and you can also bring a friend with you, no problem.

What is an ultrasound scan?

High frequency sound waves are used to produce images of the interior of the human body. These images are displayed on a TV monitor and can then be transferred to paper or photographic film.

Why have an ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound scanning is used to help monitor and diagnose conditions in many parts of the body, including the kidneys, liver and heart. It is often used to examine conditions affecting the organs in a woman's pelvis - the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. Ultrasound scanning is not dangerous and has no known side effects, so it is safe to use during pregnancy.
