The
Medical Diagnostic & Imaging Group owns and operates centres providing a broad range of diagnostic imaging. The centres are designed with particular attention to patient comfort, the quality of the imaging, and the most convenient, efficient medical support for doctors. The centres are supported by private parking, climate control, luxurious changing rooms, a spacious, relaxing reception area and a lift for infirm or trolley-bound patients.
Three of their centres offer private ultrasound scans; these are located at Weybridge in Surrey, Sevenoaks in Kent and Brentwood in Essex. Each is specially designed for unsurpassed levels of safety, comfort and dignity and brings together the best equipment across a range of diagnostic imaging modalities which include 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), 64-slice Computed Tomography (CT), nuclear medicine (Gamma Camera), digital mammography, ultrasound, digital X-ray and bone densitometry (DEXA). They are all fully digital, with each modality integrated into modern information systems.
Their electronic Picture Archive and Communication System (PACS) works with the Integrated Radiology Information System to provide a completely secure, state-of-the-art method of electronically storing and distributing images and information gathered by their diagnostic technologies. Approved radiologists can remotely access images and information via their secure virtual private network. This allows swift digital image retrieval and archiving, with reports turned around by the following day.
All of this is designed to support the partnership between patients and their highly qualified, professional, motivated team which includes leading Consultant Radiologists. With the wide range of technology available, their radiologists are able to make diagnoses across a wide range of conditions.
Private ultrasound scanning
Ultrasound is a diagnostic scanning technique. It uses high frequency sound waves to construct images of internal organs and other fluid-filled structures inside the body. Simple, safe and painless, it is frequently used to assess foetal development, detect organ abnormalities and tumours, and to examine the functioning of blood vessels and arteries, but it may also be used to examine other structures such as joints and breast. While moving across the skin, the special probe emits and receives high-frequency sounds that are inaudible.
The sound waves are reflected back from the body's organs and bones. The difference in the strength and delay of the signal returning gives the information in a variety of shades of black, white and grey. These images are displayed onto a monitor and interpreted by an expert in ultrasound.
Ultrasound scanning is perfectly safe, it does not use radiation, just sound waves. A major advantage of ultrasound is that the images appear in 'real time' so the movement of muscles, tendons, organs and blood flow can all be visualised.
A special gel is placed on your skin to allow the scanner to glide across it keeping in contact at all times. This gel is not harmful and can be wiped off as soon as the scan is finished. You will be asked to change into a gown to stop any gel from getting onto your clothes.
The ultrasound scan will be carried out by an expert in this field. This will either be a Consultant Radiologist, a Consultant Specialist in foetal medicine (for obstetric scans) or a highly qualified specialist Sonographer.
