Benefit from MRI scanning available at Ramsay Hospitals
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is one of the most advanced
methods of producing detailed images of the body's internal structures. MRI uses a very strong magnetic field and radio waves and thus avoids the use of X-Rays. MRI is one of the safest diagnostic imaging methods
available with no known risks or side effects.
What happens during an MRI scan?
On the day of your scan you will be taken to the
scanner where the full procedure will be explained to you. You will be
asked to lie down on the examination couch and made comfortable so that you can
lie perfectly still during the scan. Movement by the subject is the biggest
single cause of an unsuccessful scan.
The MRI scan will usually last about 30 minutes, depending
on the area being scanned, and the protocol requested by the Consultant
Radiologist.
Sometimes it is necessary to supplement your scan with the
injection of an 'MRI dye'. This shows up some structures more clearly. You
should not experience any after effects of the injection or the scan itself.
You should notify the X-Ray department prior to your scan if
you have ever had any metal fragments in your eyes at any time, if you cannot
lie flat comfortably or you suffer from claustrophobia; or if you have any metallic implants such as:
- Artificial Heart Valves or a Cardiac Pacemaker
- Cerebral aneurysm clips (sometimes used during brain
surgery)
- Any medical devices or stimulators
Your MRI scan results
Once the scan is completed, the images will be reported and
the results sent to the referring clinician (your doctor).
The results will not be available instantly. Your doctor
will be able to discuss the scan results with you and answer any questions you
may have.
