What is MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a technique for taking internal images of the body without using radiation. The scanner generates very clear, high quality images of structures such as the heart, brain, joints and internal organs.

These images are produced by combining the effects of magnetic fields on the hydrogen within your body, together with a sophisticated computer system. The images are carefully examined by our doctors and transferred onto a CD for use by the referring doctor.

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)

The Queen Square Imaging Centre is currently the only commercial unit able to offer fMRI in London. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a technique used to assess functionality of specific parts of the brain, usually related to pathology, and assess any potential deficit associated with surgery.

This allows surgeons with their patients to make a more informed decision about surgical options. Paradigms which we are currently able to perform are visual, motor, language and sensory.

The technique varies slightly to a routine diagnostic scan. Patients lie still in the scanner but will then be asked to perform various tasks depending on the paradigm. For example, being shown a picture and thinking of a word associated with it.

In September 2009 the Queen Square Imaging Centre installed a state of the art GE 1.5T Discovery 450, enabling them to produce highly detailed images of a quality comparable to a 3T scanner. With scan times always improving, and continuous equipment upgrades which occur throughout the year, the centre is at the forefront of MRI provision.

It is also able to scan patients following most surgical procedures (with the correct safety information), including many who may be excluded at 3T or elsewhere.

Scans can last from 15 minutes up to over an hour depending on the type of scan and area of the body which we have been asked to look at.

What happens on the day

Upon arrival you will be greeted in reception and asked to complete a registration form. The Radiographer will go through a safety questionnaire and fully explain the procedure to you. Any valuables or belongings you have with you will be safely locked away in a changing cubicle.

Stroke assessment & ultrasound services

The centre is able to offer an ultrasound service which includes both carotid and transcranial dopplers, as an independent examination or as part of a full stroke work-up.

The stroke package consists of a MRI Head (including diffusion weighted imaging), MRA neck & carotid doppler ultrasound.
