Where can I get a private MRI scan in the UK?
BMI Healthcare, the country's largest private hospital group, provides quick and easy access to MRI scanning at 53 hospitals in the UK.
Why do I need an MRI scan?
MRI scanners are imaging machines that use strong magnetic fields and radiowaves to produce detailed images of almost any part of the body, including organs, blood vessels, bones and joints. They are used to diagnose a wide range of conditions including:
- Brain tumours
- Parkinson's disease
- Sports injuries
- Aneurysms and narrowing of the arteries
- Cancers, including breast, prostate and uterine
How safe is an MRI scan?
As the body is not exposed to any radiation, MRI
scanning is a totally harmless procedure and can be used on people for
whom other forms of diagnostic imaging may not be suitable, babies and
pregnant women, for example (although as a precaution MRI scans are not
normally performed on women under three months of pregnancy). However,
as the scanner uses a very strong magnet, people with internal medical
devices such as pacemakers and cochlear implants may not be able to have
an MRI scan.
What happens during an MRI scan?
Before an MRI scan it is important to let the radiographer know if you have any medical devices or metal parts in your body, including a contraceptive coil, or if you are or may be pregnant, or if you are diabetic. Depending on which part of the body is being scanned, it may not be necessary to wear a hospital gown, in which case clothes should not have any metal buttons, zips, etc.
An MRI scan takes between 30 and 90 minutes and an injection of contrast dye may be given in order to show up certain tissues and blood vessels more clearly. The MRI scanner itself is like a short tunnel, open at both ends, with a comfortable bed that moves through the tunnel. The scanning process is painless, but very noisy and earplugs or headphones may be offered. Some people report feeling claustrophobic, although the radiographer is in contact the whole time via an intercom. BMI Healthcare has four open MRI scanners, which are designed to be less claustrophobic and are less noisy.
The results of the MRI scan are analysed by a specialist consultant radiologist and sent to the referring doctor within 2-7 days.
