Emergency dental hospitals in the UK

The UK has several large and prestigious dental schools and dental hospitals that form part of a university and are usually involved with education and training for dental surgeons and dental specialists. Dental hospitals offer specialised treatments and receive referrals from a wide geographical area; some also offer treatment for urgent cases as part of an emergency dental hospital service.

Barts and The London emergency dental hospital

Run by Tower Hamlets NHS Trust, this emergency dental hospital is one of the busiest in London. It can only be accessed by people who live in certain areas of London, including the City of London, Tower Hamlets, the London Borough of Hackney, and others. The Barts and London emergency dental hospital service provides walk-in appointments, telephone advice, and emergency treatment for: dental injuries, post-treatment emergencies, severe infections, and tooth abscesses.

The Liverpool University emergency dental hospital

The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust operates its own A&E dental emergency service. This provides treatment for:

  • People who have been involved in an accident and who have broken teeth or mouth trauma

  • Patients who have severe swelling and pain because of a tooth abscess

  • Anyone who experiences bleeding from a tooth or gum that will not stop

  • People who need dental treatment but have disabilities or medical conditions that mean they are excluded by ordinary dentists.

Treatment is provided via a ticketing system and, because the hospital provides training for junior hospital dentists and students studying to be dental surgeons, the emergency dental hospital treats people with lost fillings and crowns or even broken dentures when the demand on resources is not too great.

Cardiff dental hospital emergency service

If you need dental care urgently in Wales, access to an emergency dental hospital service is limited to Cardiff, which has the one and only teaching hospital for dentistry in this part of the UK: Cardiff's University Dental Hospital.

The Eastman emergency dental hospital, London

Part of the University College of London NHS Trust, the Eastman Dental Hospital is one of the largest in the UK, treating 85,000 outpatients each year. Patients referred to the Eastman can access complex dental procedures such as treatment for facial deformity, reconstructive oral surgery for cleft palate and diagnosis of problems that impact on the salivary glands. Dental services for more routine problems are provided for private patients only; emergency dental hospital treatment is only really available to those who have been accepted for treatment.

Birmingham emergency dental hospital

Birmingham Dental Hospital is located in St Chads, Queensway, and run by the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust. The emergency dental hospital service is well known for providing a friendly and dedicated service to those prepared to wait to see an emergency dentist. Like Birmingham’s primary care service, one of the main aims of the emergency dental hospital service is to provide teaching and practical experience to dental students. The emergency dental care team therefore consists of a larger number of junior dentists who work in close consultation with more senior colleagues.

Emergency dental hospital services in Newcastle

Newcastle hospitals run an emergency dental hospital service that operates on an open access basis. This means that it is open every week day from 8.30am in the morning, and is open to anyone who comes in according to their time of arrival. The emergency dental hospital will see only urgent cases; those with traumatic injuries, bleeding, severe pain, and infection.

University emergency dental hospital services in Manchester

The University Dental Hospital of Manchester also runs a week-day service but provides no out-of-hours emergency dental care. Only people with a true dental emergency are accepted for treatment, and this decision is made by a screening appointment with an experienced dental nurse. Emergency dental hospital services here are also only open to people not already registered with an NHS or private dentist.

Glasgow emergency dental hospital services

Glasgow Dental Hospital runs its own emergency dental treatment centre, but this operates differently to many other emergency dental hospital services. You can be seen only by making an appointment, and only patients not already registered with an NHS dentist can be accepted during working hours. There is a separate emergency dentistry service in the evening, which accepts all patients with a dental emergency.
