Nicola Lewin aged 52 from Eckington was quoted £50,000 for dental implant work at a private dentist in the UK. She contacted Smile Savers Hungary and received a quote for the same work for £16,500.
Mrs Lewin first travelled to Budapest with her husband in February of 2006, and stayed for four days, during which time she received a free consultation, started extensive treatment and spent the rest of the time sightseeing. Because of her gum disease, Mrs Lewin had to have all of her teeth extracted and then 17 upper and lower implants with crowns put in place. The initial work, despite its complexity, was completed in less than a day. A UK dentist has since appraised the work carried out in Hungary and, according to Mrs Lewin was amazed at the exceptional standards achieved.
Mrs Lewin will return to Budapest in May and again in August for follow-up treatment. The total cost, including travel and accommodation, is expected to be in the region of £16,500.
Mrs Lewin's initial impression of Budapest was not positive. On the drive from the airport she noticed that parts of the city were covered in graffiti. "I was worried about cleanliness and hygiene. I told myself that if I wasn't happy with the situation when I reached the dentist's I would not have any treatment," she said.
Her fears on arriving at the clinic were quickly alleviated. "It was so clean," she said. Describing the clinic's staff as "professional and empathetic", Mrs Lewin would happily recommend travelling to Hungary to anyone seeking dental treatment.
"The city is wonderful. Everyone was so friendly and I just loved the food, although due to the treatment was unable to eat after our first night and so lost 8lb thanks to all the walking we did while sightseeing. We visited the Danube, the Parliament building and the Opera House – wonderful," she said.
