Consultant Vascular Surgeon,
Inventor of the Fenestrated Vascular Graft, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, passionate about the safety and health of his patients and founder of the Mid Essex- University Teaching Hospital Lusaka (Out to Africa).
Mr Tom Browne trained as a doctor in 1998 in his native Dublin, Ireland. He is a General and Vascular Surgeon. He did his higher Surgical Training in Ireland, England, Wales and Australia, his Masters and Fellowships in Ireland and England. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons England, and an honorary lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University and Trinity College Dublin.
His research into the small diameter vascular graft with cell harvesting led him to work with Mr Lawrence-Brown in Perth Australia and the subsequent invention of the Fenestrated Graft which is now in use world wide.
Four years before the Francis report was considered, Mr Browne created the Green Ribbon Ward Round initiative in Broomfield hospital; a regular gathering of all relevant departments to ensure the continual safety of every patient in the hospital. The multi disciplinary team, focused on the patients' and hospital's needs, looked at a vertical management structure in a horizontal way, and implemented changes where needed.
Tom has a special clinical interest in aortic aneurysms, peripheral vascular disease, carotid artery disease, varicose veins and herniae. His surgical results are recorded on the National Vascular Registry.
Tom’s research interests include small diameter vascular grafts, robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery, fenestrated endovascular grafts and the development of an ambulatory boot for the treatment of post-phlebetic syndrome. His current research, in collaboration with the scientists and academics at Anglia Ruskin University, is on the development of a pneumatic boot for the treatment of varicose ulcers.
Tom is a clinical tutor, an instructor for the Royal College Basic Surgical Training programme and an instructor on the MSc course for robotic surgery at Anglia Ruskin University. He is frequently asked to lecture, present and to give talks and has published in excess of 75 papers, presentations and other works.
He is married to Nicky for 28 years; they have 4 children and 2 dogs. He enjoys Rugby, Cricket, Golf, Tennis, Travel, Languages and traditional Irish music. He is learning to play the Uilleann Pipes.
