Consultant Colorectal Surgeon,
Mr Simon Radley, MBChB MD FRCS, graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1985 with Honours in Surgery.
He undertook registrar surgical training in general and colorectal surgery in the West Midlands and went on to complete his specialist training in colorectal surgery at St Marks Hospital in London. During his registrar surgical training he also undertook an overseas training fellowship, having been awarded grants from the International College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He travelled to America to Boston, Minneapolis and The Mayo Clinic to study treatments for early and advanced rectal cancer.
On completion of his registrar surgical training he took up a post as Senior Lecturer in Colorectal Surgery at Birmingham University and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
Simon Radley performs the HALO procedure, which is the swift and virtually pain-free treatment for people who suffer with haemorrhoids.
Mr Simon Radley was appointed to the post of Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in April 2002 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. As a consultant he has played a key role in introducing laparoscopic colorectal surgery and enhanced surgery recovery protocols to University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and to BMI The Priory Hospital, Edgbaston, Birmingham. Having a large inflammatory bowel disease practice, he became the first West Midlands surgeon to perform the complex laparoscopic ileoanal pouch procedure and now receives referrals from throughout the region.
With his gynaecological colleagues he pioneered the first combined pelvic floor clinic in the West Midlands. He has been responsible for introducing novel treatments for pelvic floor dysfunction such as sacral nerve modulation to the West Midlands.
He has used his expertise in laparoscopic colorectal surgery to develop a service at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital where he holds an honorary contract.
Mr Simon Radley has been the Clinical Service Lead for Gastro-intestinal surgery at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He is regularly invited to lecture at local, national and international meetings.
He is a trainer in the national LAPCO training program, which aims to teach UK Consultant Surgeons how to perform laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery.
Mr Radley has published widely on colorectal disease and in particular functional bowel disorders. He has written several book chapters.
