Mr Khan, Clinical Lead for Colorectal Cancer, works at Portsmouth Hospital NHS Trust. He provides private treatment for colorectal problems at Spire Portsmouth Hospital.

Training

Mr Khan trained in general, colorectal and laparoscopic surgery. He is currently appointed as a Consultant Colorectal & Laparoscopic Surgeon and Clinical Lead at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust. Jim graduated in 1996 specialising in general surgery and became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow in 2002.

He completed his specialist registrar training in Wessex and was awarded a master's degree from Cardiff University for his research in photo-plethysmography. He learned complex pelvic and rectal cancer surgery while working with Professor Heald at Basingstoke. His specialist colorectal training included the UK National Laparoscopic Fellowship in advanced laparoscopic pelvic surgery at Colchester, a travelling clinical fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester (US) and laparoscopic training courses at Hamburg, Strasbourg and Dundee.

Mr Khan has performed more than 200 laparoscopic colorectal procedures and has published his results widely. He is a trainer in laparoscopic colorectal surgery at LAPCO and teaches the new key-hole approach to colon and rectal surgery. Jim is a JAG accredited endoscopist and has expertise in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy for cancer diagnosis, screening and surveillance. At Portsmouth he is actively involved in medical education and clinical training. He trains on a variety of courses including basic surgical skills, laparoscopic skills, trauma (ATLS) and colo-proctology. He can carry out robotic surgery for his private patients at Queen Alexandra Hospital.

He is Co-Director of VIMARS (Victory Institute of Minimal Access Surgery).

Mr Khan has special interest and expertise in the management of haemorrhoids. He offers a wide range of treatment options for the management of haemorrhoids including office based procedures, conventional haemorrhoid surgery, stapled haemorrhoidectomy (PPH) and the latest haemorrhoidal artery ligation procedure (transanal haemorrhoidal artery dearterialisation – THD) commonly know as painless haemorrhoidectomy.
