Colon cancer could be prevented by vitamin D supplements, according to new research.
Published in the British Medical Journal, a recent study led by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and Imperial College London, has found a link between high levels of vitamin D and low risk of contracting bowel cancer.
The study found that participants with the highest levels of blood vitamin D concentration, had an almost 40 per cent decrease in the risk of developing the cancer when compared to those with the lowest blood concentration levels.
While the research could help lower the numbers of bowel cancer cases, Carina Powney, an advisory service nurse at Bowel Cancer UK, has urged people not to rush into taking vitamin supplements because the long term effects are not known.
She added that diet has a big influence over bowel cancer, and said: "It is well established that a diet high in animal fats, processed meats, alcohol, and low in fibre and fruit and vegetables puts people at a higher risk of developing CRC (colorectal cancer). Obesity and sedentary lifestyles are other risk factors."
