People over the age of 50 may be more likely to take holidays as they have an increased amount of leisure time, say Age Concern. On average, this demographic tends to be better off financially and is more inclined to travel.
As well as having more motivation to take a holiday, many over-50s are perfectly healthy and pose no risk to travel insurance companies. But many travel insurers treat older travellers as a much higher risk- without statistics to back their prejudices.
"When older people themselves see no barriers to travelling and there are no relevant medical issues then companies should not restrict their activities," says Age Concern.
Over-50s travel provider Saga has noted that over the past ten years, its sales of trips to long-haul destinations has doubled, suggesting the mature market is raring to explore the globe. Its top ten long-haul destinations include countries such as China, New Zealand and South Africa.
