Older people should take targeted exercise to reduce their chances of falling.
This is according to Vicky Johnston, specialist physiotherapist in falls prevention for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, who said that strength training, balance training and flexibility were they key areas to focus on.
For those who have fallen already, she urged physiotherapists to prescribe exercises to specifically work on improving the individual's balance.
However, those who have not fallen should centre on keeping active and aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity a day.
The remarks come after the American and British Geriatric Societies' published updates to their guidelines on preventing falls in older people.
Advice regarding feet and footwear, fear of falling and carrying out daily living activities has been included in the update, along with an exercise component.
Ms Johnston added that Tai Chi is a particularly appropriate exercise for older people who want to improve their balance training.
