Take to the slopes with plenty of cover

As adventurous Brits prepare to jet off to the slopes for some winter fun, moneysupermarket.com reveals annual travel insurance can often be better value than a single trip policy when travelling long haul.

Research from the price comparison website says that for a family heading to the US an annual worldwide multi-trip policy with winter sports cover is better value than the single trip alternative. Often the annual policy has similar or better levels of cover than the single trip option - providing further reassurance for a snow filled adventure.

When looking to cover winter escapades closer to home the story is quite different. A single trip two week policy, with winter sports insurance, for a family holiday in Europe can cost as little as £27. The best value annual cover on the other hand comes in at almost £60, only a better option if you are planning to travel more than twice a year.

Andy Leadbetter of moneysupermarket.com says: "When it comes to insurance it is worth questioning what sort of traveller you are. If you're likely to take several trips to Europe within 12 months then an annual policy of course makes sense. However, even if you're only planning one trip further afield, worldwide annual multi-trip insurance is the better option and you don't even have to scrimp on the level of cover you receive. As we hurtle headlong into ski season I strongly stress the importance of checking the small print on your policy for all winter sports you intend to do, especially if you plan to go off-piste. Medical treatment can be extremely costly whilst abroad and so medical expenses and personal accident cover are a vital part of your policy.”

moneysupermarket.com recommends at least the following level of cover

  • £2 million for medical expenses
  • £1 million personal liability
  • £3,000 cancellation
  • £1,500 for baggage
  • £250 for cash
