A surgeon in Vienna has become the first in Europe to use stem cell technology in cosmetic surgery.
Dr Karl-Georg Heinrich claims that he can now achieve higher success rates for procedures such as breast enlargement, treatment of wrinkles and facial rejuvenation by using a patient's own cells.
"For some time we have known that stem cells exist in fat and that we remove these cells in liposuction," the cosmetic surgeon said.
"We now can use the patient's own living cells as a filler where ever more fullness is needed.
"With stem cells we not only get 100 per cent natural results - these will also last a lifetime," Dr Heinrich claimed.
However, UK experts have warned patients to be wary of unsubstantiated claims about the success of stem cell treatments for cosmetic surgery, noting in a letter to the Times in August 2006 that many such therapies have not yet been properly tested.
