Skipton buys Medical Care Direct

The Private Health Partnership (PHP), part of Skipton Building Society group, has acquired self-pay specialist Medical Care Direct (MCD).

MCD will be a subsidiary of PHP and retain its own separate brand identity as part of the deal.

MCD was founded in 2001 at the height of the self-pay boom. It has struggled to survive as all its competitors launched by insurers folded quickly.

Jan Lawson of PHP says "The self-pay sector of the market has been growing 20% year on year for the last three years. The self-pay market fits naturally with a number of existing products such as high excess PMI policies. Also it can provide significant cost advantages for private individuals who are not covered by a PMI scheme."

MCD offers a £27 a year membership to individuals who want it to help them choose the right hospital for self-pay treatment .The new owners may enable it to grow from a small static membership base. It may also enable it to widen its services, with the various ideas that were originally touted in its heyday and subsequently shelved.
