Thirty hardworking staff at the Bradford office took 20 minutes out of their day for individual consultations that checked their family history, body mass index (BMI) and waist measurements, as well as providing advice for making positive health changes to their work, home and social life.
The workplace consultations have been designed by national Leeds-based charity Heart Research UK in recognition of the fact that the UK has some of the longest working hours in Europe and, with bulging in-trays, many employees give regular exercise and healthy eating a low priority.
Small, simple changes to the daily routine, such as reducing portion size, using the stairs more and going for a walk at lunchtime, can make all the difference to heart health. Such measures can also increase staff productivity, reduce absenteeism, boost morale and help teams feel more motivated.
Over the past ten years Sovereign has donated more than £100k to the charity to support vital research. In 2009 it donated £15,000 and this is being used to pay for the production of a heart health DVD for deaf people, who often miss key health messages because many medical terms are not represented in sign language.
