Gut problems may be avoided with careful diet

a stressed gut can be made worse by certain foods

Careful eating can help avoid exacerbating gut problems, it has been noted.

Expert gastroenterologist Dr Nick Read explained a stressed gut can be made worse by certain foods - which include fats, some fruits and coffee.

Those who are sensitive to such things must be aware of what to eat, he said, noting: "It should be foods that are relatively low in fat, relatively bland foods – not too hot or spicy. Some spices are quite calming on the gut."

According to Dr Read, turmeric, cumin and coriander can all be beneficial, but people should avoid chilli and high-fibre products such as bran unless they are in a phase where they are less sensitive.

He was commenting after research by Doctors.net.uk and OTC Bulletin revealed problems such as indigestion and heartburn are increasingly common among those visiting GPs, with nearly 90 per cent of doctors seeing patients with these issues several times every week.
