Fitness 'vital' for pensioners

It has been suggested that keeping fit is vital for people who are approaching old age.

Leading personal trainer Matt Roberts, who has helped a number of celebrities to stay get in good shape, said that pensioners can and should keep fit like any individual by setting themselves personal targets.

He suggested starting with a low intensity exercise and working up.

"Regular weight training is among the best things to do as you get older as it helps improve your bone density and therefore protects against broken bones," he noted.

"Improving your mobility as you age is also essential for a long and active retirement."

The comments come as Jane Fonda has released two new fitness DVDs at the age of 72.

Fonda has released over 20 top-selling fitness videos since 1982 and her latest return to the market aims to help older people to maintain their "overall health and wellbeing".
