Colon cancer cases 'rising'

colon

There has been an increase in the recorded number of cases of colon cancer in Europe, according to a recent report.

The European Journal of Cancer published figures showing that by 2008 the disease accounted for 13.6 per cent of all cancer cases in Europe.

Dr Andrew Renehan from the University of Manchester worked on the study.

He claimed that number of cases could be lowered by improving levels of physical activity and reducing excess weight problems.

However, Mark Flannagan, the chief executive of Beating Bowel Cancer, said that bowel cancer was still a problem because people are not taking action early enough.

"Nine of out ten bowel cancers could be treated if caught early enough but they are not now," he said.

"The reasons for that are the screening programme is dealing with taboos - bottoms, bowels, poo on a stick - it's that type of thing that people don't really talk about in our society."
