Carers 'urged to access support'

carers urged to access support

People who are caring for a loved one or family member at home have been encouraged to take advantage of the benefits available to them.

Comments from Steve McIntosh, policy and public affairs officer for Carers UK, suggest that many carers are unaware that they are entitled to financial help.

"Carers UK estimated a few years ago that about 40 to 60 per cent of carers benefits go unclaimed, so the already low level of carers benefits aren't being taken up because many people don't realise that they are entitled to financial support," he said.

"This is because many carers don't realise that having carer responsibilities for any ill or disabled loved one, means they have the right to entitlements as well."

The comments follow research conducted by the Princess Royal Trust for Carers that revealed that 37 per cent of carers do not want to wake up in the morning because they are beset by dire financial circumstances.
