Care home tool developed

long term care

A tool has been developed to assess the suitability of care homes for their elderly residents.

Funded by the Economic and Physical Sciences Research Council, the EVOLVE evaluation tool formed part of a project undertaken by a team of experts from the University of Sheffield.

Judith Torrington, reader in architecture at the university, commented: "The population of people aged over 65 will increase substantially over the next 25 years.

"It is important that the housing options available meet their needs both in terms of supporting them physically as they age and enabling them to maintain a good quality of life."

The tool features a series of checklists designed to allow the user to assess the building with regards to the specific requirements of its residents.

For people in nursing homes, these requirements may include issues such as accessibility, health and safety, comfort and personal care.

Ms Torrington added that EVOLVE is an "easy to use tool which can be used to assess the design of the home environment, whether it is a large new housing development or an individual private home".
