Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Derek McMinn, who practices at BMI The Edgbaston Hospital, has been named by peers as being amongst the UK’s top hip replacement surgeons in a survey conducted by the Daily Mail.
The survey, which canvassed the leading hip surgeons, asked just one simple question: ‘If your own nearest and dearest were to need total hip replacement to whom would you refer them?’ The surgeons recognised Mr McMinn as being amongst the best in the country. In the Daily Mail article that announced the survey, fellow surgeons said the following of Mr McMinn: “He developed the Birmingham resurfaced hip (an alternative to the hip replacement where the worn out joint is capped) and is a very good surgeon technically.”
Mr McMinn was flattered to be highly recommended by peers, and also explained the importance of his field.“Often our patients are in a lot of pain with very limited mobility, and our job is to do as much as we can as surgeons to help restore some normality. In doing so, we always strive to deliver the care that we would want our loved ones to receive,” said Mr McMinn. “I am extremely proud, not only by this recognition, but also by the trust placed in me by my peers.”
Paul Holdom, Regional Director of BMI the West Midlands and East Anglia Region added “Hip replacement surgery, and in particular hip resurfacing surgery, is a very complex specialty which requires great skill and experience. We are very proud that Mr McMinn has received this well deserved national recognition”.
Mr McMinn started his consultant practice in 1988 and has been involved in joint replacement design and development. He designed replacements for total hip and total kneereplacement and revision surgery and over the past two decades has developed, with others, the first successful hip resurfacing product for young active people, the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing.
