Standard travel insurance schemes do not provide cover for medical tourists. A major UK travel insurance provider has launched its own cover, underwritten by travel insurer AXA. Travel insurance tends to cover medical emergencies, the unexpected happening, while this cover is for those traveling abroad for a medical reason.
P J Hayman has launched Free Spirit-travel for treatment, travel insurance for those travelling abroad for medical, cosmetic or dental treatment, but not heart surgery or cancer treatment.
Available to UK or Channel Island nationals up to age 74 who are registered with a Medical Practitioner in the European Economic Area (the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or the Channel Islands. A UK national living in France would be eligible to take out cover.
Peter Hayman says, “With the cost of treatment abroad an average of £1,256 lower than in the UK and with many reputable companies operating overseas, the option of foreign surgery should not be ignored. To put any fears to rest, it is important that those considering surgery abroad should undertake thorough research before making their decision and also ensure they take out appropriate travel insurance to cover them in the unlikely event that anything goes wrong.”
Important areas covered with limits shown:
Cancellation £1,000 (option to increase to £5,000)
Emergency Medical expenses £5 million
Personal Liability £2 million
Specific cover for complications occurring after 48 hours and up to 31 days whilst abroad - £ 5 million
