Catching illness early 'will help prostate cancer treatment'

Prostate UK

Catching the illness as early as possible will ensure a patient's prostate cancer treatment is as successful as possible, according to a health expert.

Amanda McLean, chief executive of Prostate UK, advised men to undertake regular prostates specific antigen tests by visiting their GP, because this will give doctors the best chance of catching the illness at an early stage.

She claimed that if it is detected early enough it will generally be resolved, but she said a healthy lifestyle played an important role in preventing the illness.

"There is also increasing evidence that overweight men and men with higher cholesterol levels are more susceptible," she added.

Ms McLean noted that there is a higher risk of developing prostate cancer if it runs in the family or if a man is of Afro-Caribbean origin.

Cancer Research says that 300,000 men are diagnosed with the illness each year across Europe, with the highest rates occurring in northern Europe and Scandinavia.
