Acupuncture 'improves infertility treatment'

Twins born with new infertility treatment
Women who are undergoing infertility treatment may want to consider acupuncture after a large new study found that it can improve the chances of successful IVF.

Scientists at the University of Southampton's reproductive medicine unit carried out a study involving more than 2,000 women, all of whom were undergoing infertility treatment.

The researchers found that women who were treated with acupuncture around the same time as embryo transfer were more likely to become pregnant.

They revealed: "Acupuncture around the time of embryo transfer achieves a higher live birth rate of 35 per cent compared with 22 per cent without active acupuncture."

A spokeswoman for Infertility Network UK told the Telegraph: "These results appear to show that acupuncture given with embryo transfers can help improve success rates and we look forward to further research in this area to confirm this."

She added that anything that improves success rates for infertility treatment is "good news".

Estimates suggest that at least one in five couples of reproductive age is affected by infertility.
