A 101-year-old woman has become the oldest patient ever to have a
hip replacement operation.
Lily Wauters, from Staffordshire, was in constant pain before undergoing the procedure at Sutton Coldfield's Good Hope Hospital.
Her right hip had worn away and surgeons decided that a total hip replacement would provide pain relief and enable her to regain her independence.
Ms Wauters told the BBC: "I woke up and did not have a reaction or anything. I didn't feel woozy even with the anaesthetic. And no pain or anything - as if I hadn't had anything done. It was wonderful."
The patient is now recuperating well and hopes to be sufficiently mobile to dance at her 102nd birthday next month.
The average hip replacement in a UK private hospital costs between £7,000 and £9,000, which includes hospital charges and consultants' fees.
