A new form of
obesity treatment is now being offered by
The Hospital Group,a leading provider of weight loss surgery.
Patients can now receive 'balloon implants' - silicone balloons that are inserted into the stomach, making the patient feel full and eat less.
The procedure, which is already on offer in the US , will be available to patients with a body mass index in excess of 30, although it is not recommended for morbidly obese individuals.
Prices start at £3,950 and Brazilian research suggests that patients can lose nearly half of their excess weight on the back of the obesity treatment.
However, the Hospital Group notes that the balloon is designed to re-educate patients about their relationship with food and that some patients may start to gain weight again, meaning that they may subsequently want to consider another form of obesity treatment such as gastric bypass or gastric band.
