Study confirms safety of liposuction

A new study has provided reassuring data on liposuction, a cosmetic surgery procedure often chosen by people who wish to reduce their body fat.

Experts at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre found that, when performed under the appropriate conditions, the procedure is safe and does not have an adverse effect on the body's organs.

Researchers looked at the effects of liposuction on different parts of the body, including the heart and lungs, both during and after the procedure.

Reporting the findings in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, principal investigator Dr Jeffrey Kenkel, vice chairman of plastic surgery at the medical centre, said: "The purpose of our study was to confirm that liposuction is a safe procedure, as well as find ways to make it even safer.

"Like any surgical procedure, liposuction stresses the body to some degree. However, when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in an accredited medical facility, liposuction continues to be a safe operation," the expert added.
