Although it has been suggested in recent years that ‘little and often’ is the key to weight loss, experts are now recommending a return to the traditional ‘3 meals a day’ rather than 6 small meals.
University scientists found that eating three well-balanced, high-protein meals per day helped a group of overweight or obese males feel fuller for longer. They were less hungry between meals and were able to lose weight. Those eating 3 meals a day actually consumed on average 750 calories a day less.
The study also found that it was easier for patients to stick to 3 meals a day rather than 6, taking into account busy work and family schedules.
However, one crucial finding was the importance of protein. The group studied a group on normal protein levels compared to a group eating high-protein diets. Researchers found that those on the high protein diet felt full for longer than those on normal protein diets.
David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “We see thousands of patients who have tried dieting, but are unable to succeed due to deeply ingrained food issues, medical problems or poor habits.
Those who want to lose weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle could consider a bariatric procedure, which can lead to dramatic weight loss and improve health. A weight loss procedure like a gastric band is a vital tool that enables people to lose stones of excess weight. A weight loss procedure will essentially make the patient feel fuller and for longer on fewer calories.
Most of our patients have been unable to lose weight via traditional diet and exercise, so it’s often a last resort. It is not an easy option – patients will have to follow strict pre and post-operative diets. However, we do have a team of expert dietitians who specialise in helping bariatric patients to succeed and provide 1 to 1 support for 2 years after the procedure and 99% of our patients do lose weight, many losing over 10 stone.
The Hospital Group, is committed to providing the very highest standards and all procedures are performed by an expert medical team in state-of-the-art facilities that are second to none.”
