Robert Buckland MP inspects his health at Swindon hospital

Robert Buckland MP, for South Swindon, made a special visit to BMI The Ridgeway Hospital this week to speak with the hospital’s Executive Director Tony Yates and find out about the launch of BMI Healthcare’s ‘Inspect Your Health’ campaign, which the hospital will be rolling out to the local community over the next year. Mr Buckland also visited the site of the hospital’s planned £3.2 million development that will further enhance the hospitals position as a leading provider of healthcare in the community with the provision of a third new operating theatre, extension to the main hospital reception, a refurbishment of the existing pharmacy and new consultation rooms. During his visit Mr Buckland also met with staff members to discuss their roles and the vital part the hospital plays in the local Swindon community.

As part of his visit Mr Buckland received a blood pressure check and discovered that, as part of the hospitals’ ‘Inspect Your Health’ campaign, teams of nurses would be going out into the local Swindon community to offer these checks as well as with checks for blood glucose and cholesterol, Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fat percentage, for free.

The health of the UK has been under increasing scrutiny recently. Figures have revealed that British women are the fattest in Europe while men are in joint fourth place behind Ireland, Spain and Andorra. The alarming rise in obesity has in turn led to an increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the UK and there are now 2.8 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK with an estimated 850,000 people who have the condition but don’t know it.

Type 2 diabetes can be treated, or even prevented, if people make positive changes to their lifestyle. This can include exercising more regularly, eating a healthier diet and cutting back on the consumption of alcohol. The ‘Inspect your Health’ campaign will provide the Swindon community with the information they need to lead a long and healthy life and help raise awareness around some of the most prevalent diseases in the UK.

Robert Buckland MP commented, “I was pleased to find out about the hospital’s new development plans and also find out about their ambitious plans to provide free mini health checks to the local community. Improving the health of our local Swindon community is crucial and events like these, with nurses and clinical staff coming out into the community, will be a great way to get the healthy living message across.”

After the visit, Tony Yates commented, “It was a great honour to welcome Robert Buckland to our hospital and give him a tour of the departments and facilities where he met with our dedicated team of staff and consultants. We are extremely proud that he was impressed by the level of care and treatment and the range of surgery that we have been offering to our patients and Swindon community over the past 27 years. We hope that his visit will help encourage members of the local community to do more to find out about their health and hopefully visit one of our Inspect Your Health events in the coming months.”

BMI hospitals will begin holding "Inspect Your Health" screening and health promotion events at businesses and shopping centres from November 2010 through to October 2011.
