Revolutionary 'Hilotherapy' aids cosmetic surgery healing

Patients visiting some of the UK's most progressive cosmetic surgery clinics can now benefit from a revolutionary healing therapy called Hilotherapy.

The system involves adaptable cuffs through which cool water is circulated, helping to reduce swelling and pain.

Ice is often used to treat swelling, but the extreme temperatures can cause nerve and tissue damage.

With the Hilotherapy system, the cuffs can be set to the required degree, thereby controlling the temperature applied to the wounded area.

Hilotech director Stuart Watkins described the therapy as "an advanced pain management solution proven to dramatically reduce swelling, pain and bruising".

He claimed: "Hilotherapy is set to revolutionise medicinal therapy and can be applicable to a number of fields - it is currently widely used in sports injury, plastic surgery, maxillofacial and orthopaedic surgery, but can be used for a number of other applications."

One well-known figure to have used the therapy is Olympian Jade Johnson, who recently injured herself in BBC One show 'Strictly Come Dancing'.

Kevin Lidlow, who has served as GB team physiotherapist at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, revealed: "We have been applying Hilotherapy which has considerably accelerated the healing process and may help her dance her way not just to the Strictly final but also to the Olympics in 2012."

According to the company's website, Hilotherapy can be used in the recovery room, for post-traumatic use and to relieve chronic pain caused by conditions such as arthritis and migraine.
