Race for cancer

They fully understand the misery that cancer can cause. Some have family members who have suffered from the disease - one woman's cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 35 and another lost her father to Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

And they all have regular contact with cancer sufferers through their work for York-based Benenden Healthcare Society, a mutual "not for profit" friendly society. A group of Benenden employees are preparing to take part in York's Race For Life next month in a bid to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The "Benenden Ladies" have taken part for a number of years in the event held on Knavesmire, which will be staged this year on Sunday, July 6.

Benenden staff have regular contact with members who are using the society's cancer care support benefits, as well as personally knowing friends and family members who have cancer.

One of the runners, Sally Harris, says: "My cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer at 35 years old. She is the mother of two small children, so for her to be facing this at such a young age was a huge shock to all the family. Thankfully, everything has gone well and she has recently been given the all-clear, but it certainly brought it home to me how many families are affected by cancer.” Jenny Poulter, says: "My motivation for doing the run is to raise money for Cancer Research as I lost my dad to Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma a few years ago. It is one of those cancers that they don't know a tremendous amount about."

The Benenden Ladies are hoping to raise £500 for Cancer Research UK. Their fundraising webpage can be found at: www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/benenden_ladies.

Race for Life is Cancer Research UK's flagship event that has grown to become the UK's largest women-only fundraising event. In 2007 it brought together 665,000 women across the country to walk, jog or run 5 kilometres to raise £40 million pounds for the charity.
